CIRP - Cesium Irradiator
Replacement Project

Radiological sources are used in many different industries such as cancer treatment, testing industrial equipment and sterilization of equipment. Conversely, if the radioactive sources fall into the wrong hands they can be possibly be used in dirty bombs.

The use of radioactive sources requires expertise, training and strict security measures. This places a burden on the Radiation Safety office and Researchers of the company where it is installed.

The Cesium Irradiator Replacement Project(CIRP), offered by ORS, provides qualified sites who are interested in making the switch from gamma rays with a financial incentive towards the purchase price of a new non-radioisotopic device, as well as the removal and disposal of the cesium irradiator.

We recently decided to use X-ray instead of cesium irradiators in our new building. Mount Sinai is proactively looking at alternative technologies and will, hopefully, phase out all radioactive material as time goes by.

This program is from the Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of Radiological Security (ORS). For qualified participants the ORS will remove and dispose of the Cesium irradiator, saving the site significant costs. They will also offer a financial payment towards the purchase of a non-radioisotopic device up to 50% of the purchase price.
